Why would I sing to this? This is the sound of my youth! Art of Noise, Kraftwerk, Early Hip-Hop soundscapes. The drum machine was initially used in Reggae by Lee Scratch Perry. Before that Sly & The Family Stone broke ground, being the first major label artists to employ it.
The way it got to Jamaica was because Bob Marley & The Wailers were on tour with The Family Stone. They were kicked off the tour for overshadowing the headliners. Apparently, Marley’s bassist (Aston “Family Man” Barrett) took a “Rhythm Box” back home to Jamaica. I know that’s not the whole story, but it’s close. I’m a pretty big nerd about these things.
